QW: Write: What do I care about this Thanksgiving? Do I care only about myself? Do I care about others? Why might it be important to care and take care with myself before I worry about others? What does it meant to be thankful?

FILL AT LEAST ONE PAGE IN YOUR NOTEBOOK.
Come up with examples to show what you are thinking about, to make your point. Be writers and communicators.
Have a great Thanksgiving week. Be ready to take Seedfolks final test and project on your return.

ENGLISH 8
QW: A different kind of writing, in your notebooks
  1. Create one list -- what you are thankful or grateful for
  2. Create a second list --  a list of your own personal needs
  3. Create a third list -- a list of your own personal wants
  4. Now, pretend you are someone else. Pretend you live in a foreign country, that your family is poor, that girls are not allowed to go to school past the age of 7, and that your village is under siege by warring factions.  What then are you grateful for. What are your needs? What are your wants?
  5. Respond --Are people’s needs really much different? Why might people’s needs be different?
Fill at least one page in your notebooks, NOT skipping every other line and NOT writing in huge letters, respond to the following:
Your ideas will be shared in a list for the 8th grade so everyone can see it. In connection with reading John Steinbeck’s The Pearl, we will explore these ideas.

Share turkey essays.  Share each others. In a group of 3. Pick the best one. If  time, will share with the class -- or when we come back OR take it to your Thanksgiving dinner and read it. Only after dessert!
AND HAVE A GREAT THANKSGIVING BREAK!
Ready to start John Steinbeck and The Pearl.

ENGLISH 7 Weds. ,Nov. 16, 2016

Handed in character studies. Use late pass to hand in tomorrow.

Listen, annotate, finish worksheet: Florence. Worksheet packet handed in today. Make sure name on top.

That Sam in Seedfolks is a somewhat autobiographical stand-in for the author means he based Sam partly on himself.  He said that he lived in a neighborhood much like the one he created in Seedfolks. He would often wait at the bus stop or in checkout lines, and make conversation with people just to show that he was a friend and not a foe or enemy. He likes bringing people together.

Read, with a partner, “From Seed to Seedfolks,” by the author.
How to do that--On chromebook, go to Twin Hills home page, then to my homework page. (You should bookmark that!) Open it up and click on the link to Paul Fleischman afterword. Read the essay there.
Then you will do the following writing.
QW: On a separate piece of paper to hand in.
What are some of the things that Sam does in Seedfolks that many other people never bother to do? Why do you think Sam’s approach helps him get through to people? Why do you think the author “cast” himself as Sam?

HW: Thurs: Mug week # 12  (Expect a quiz)
Finish reading the author’s statement if not done in class. Link above. Turn in character studies with late pass.
Fri: Spelling quiz Unit # 13

Turkey Essay This is fun. Access the assignment online via the class website. Copy it to your google docs shared English folder. You must brainstorm first and hand in that brainstorm tomorrow.
Use class time today for your rough draft. Time to finish (30 minutes) and share final draft in class tomorrow.

In "Up the Slide," a young man sets out to do something simple that turns into a hair-raising, life-threatening adventure. Connect to the character's experience by thinking of a time when you have gotten yourself into a situation that was more difficult to get out of than you thought it would be.

About Me

Sebastopol, CA
After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
