ENGLISH 7
  • Grammar worksheet. Review and take 10 minutes to do as much as can on it.  Do pgs. 70 & 71. Do not do Exercise #12.
  • Check in and review Jing-Mei character traits. Checks in notebooks.
Review how to find her character trait, and what it says about her.
For homework, complete a rough draft of a character study of Jing-Mei in the story "Two Kinds." Make sure to find at least five direct passages that show her character traits to say about her in the story. Use your chart as well as your handout on how to find out about a person's character. Think about how she changes over the course of the story.

Fri:  Spelling Quiz, Unit 4; Make sure you have completed Week 4, practice test. One-quarter through novel and a progress check.

ENGLISH 8
Essay work -- Types of essays and how to dissect or read a prompt. Pgs 16 & 17.
Read over p. 17 in your essay packet.

Rough  Draft due tomorrow. The task: Write a one-paragraph character study of Squeaky, the main character  in “Raymond’s Run.” The writing must include at least three direct passages to show how Squeaky changes from beginning to end in the story. Use handouts to help.

HW:  Weds:  RD Squeaky character study. Write final in class on Weds.

After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
