Discuss handout on character traits.


Let’s talk about how to do a character study. Our example will be the main character in “Two Kinds.”
How do we find out about a person’s character? Begin work on Jing Mei character study.

HW: Tues: Find at least five instances and direct passages in “Two Kinds” for Jing Mei. Write down the direct passage, the page number you found it and what trait it shows. Type or print and have ready for class. We will work on her character study paragraph together. Finish interviews.
HW: Weds: Rough draft Jing Mei character study paragraph; planner check. F
Thurs: Mug Week 3; Final draft Jing Mei character study paragraph (include RD)
Fri: Spelling Unit 4; quiz in class.
Reading check # 1. Read a third of your book.
ENGLISH 8
The VERDICT. You all did a great job, especially dividing up the tasks and organizing your evidence. Of the four, eighth-grade classes,  the defense took the honors, and saved the murderer, with the judge (ahem) declaring him not guilty by reason of insanity.

Character Wheel -- fill it in for  "Squeaky." See below.
In  Literature textbooks, read “Raymond’s Run,”  p. 288.
In this story, you will be charting and examining the main character, a girl  named Squeaky. You will be writing a character paragraph on her. Take notes (and/or  fill in the chart) where you find an instance that shows something about Squeaky’s character so that you are ready to write that character study paragraph.


HW:  Tues--Finish reading Raymond’s Run, p. 288, lit textbook. Take notes on her character -- instances where her personality is evident. Find those passages and page numbers where located.

After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
