ENGLISH 7
On Wednesday, completed worksheets on "Two Kinds."
On Thursday -- 
  • Check in/ review Mug.
  • Returned rough drafts on Jing Mei. Final due tomorrow. (I will return it to you at the end of the period)
  • Handout on how to use quotes:
  • Don’t say: On page 26 in paragraph two it says, “......” INSTEAD, WRITE: “Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. ”  (24)

  • Worktime. Do spelling practice tests. Get a Chromebook and a headset. Make sure to practice Week 4.

HW: Fri: Spelling test on Week 4
Final Draft -- Jing Mei character study. Staple (ahead) rough draft to final for full credit.

ENGLISH 8
On Wednesday, wrote a final draft of the Squeaky character study, using your RD to help, along with the book if you like. Turned in the RD to the class basket and put the final draft in your English folder in Google docs.
On Thursday --
Read over your notes and work on pgs. 16 & 17 on essays.
Then completed the quiz/worksheet: Classifying Essay Prompts. With one partner.

QW: “Don’t fall asleep. Your life may depend on it.”--Sherlock Holmes, a line from The Adventure of the Speckled Band.
Make sure to fill at least one page in your notebook.
Keep your pen on the paper. Let your ideas flow and just be. Call it automatic writing. See what happens. Do not edit yourself.

Review/Read:  in literature textbook,  The Adventure of the Speckled Band, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, p. 462. Be aware (write down) plot developments so you can diagram the plot of the story on Friday.

HW: Fri: Finish reading The Adventure of the Speckled Band, p. 462. Plot it out. Take notes, marking direct passages.

After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
