Reviewed a few questions for All Summer In A Day -- with partners. In literature textbook.

HW: Thurs: Mugs, Week 5 and turn in check-in sheet (worth 25 points)
Fri:  Final draft Margot character study. Must include rough draft.
Novel Check #3. Make sure you have finished your book.

ENGLISH 8
Check-in essay work.

QW: PROMPT #1: Books like The Hunger Games and Harry Potter have become nothing short of a cultural phenomenon. People of all ages have quickly become entwined in the stories and the characters that these books deliver. Why do you think that these popular novels have hit it big with mass crowds? What is it that people find so appealing in these types of books?
AND  (Do both. One paragraph each.)
PROMPT #2: Before you begin reading The Hunger Games, briefly write a little bit about what you think of the importance of friendship. What does it mean to be a good friend to another person? Describe an experience that you have had in which you really were there for a friend and helped them.
Hand out The Hunger Games books. Names in book in ink. Sign out sheet with the number of your book. Write condition of the book. Many of them are new.

Reading schedule (handout)

Listen to interviews with author Suzanne Collins, scholastic.com. Her thoughts on both classical and contemporary inspiration for the novel, how TV has numbed (desensitized) us to violence, the most difficult part about writing the novel, and some personal details about her.

HW: Thurs: Begin reading The Hunger Games.  Complete worksheet.
Tues., Oct 3-- Read Chapters 1 through and including Chapter 6.

After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
