ENGLISH 7
Turn in character studies, RD and FD stapled
Last Novel Check (#3)
On a separate piece of paper to hand in, write:
A letter to the author. Please say what you liked about the novel, with specific examples. If you did not like something, write your criticism with tact and be constructive. Make sure you comment on the main character(S) as well as the ending. Say whether or not you would recommend the novel to someone else.
Use proper letter writing form. Fill out least two-thirds of a page.

Turn in worksheet, pre-reading activity for The Hunger Games
QW: Respond to one of the following writing prompts.
Prompt 1: Was there a time period or a moment in your life when you felt like you just wanted to run away from your life? Describe the situation that led to your feelings.   OR
Prompt 2: Do you have any siblings? How close are you to your sibling(s)? Describe your relationship with your brother(s) and/or sister(s). If you don’t have a sibling, describe how you like being an only child.   
Fill AT LEAST one page in your notebook.
QUIZ--Chapter 1 -- Eight-question quiz -- on whiteboard
Finish filling out literary terms for The Hunger Games

Discussion questions, Chapter 1. Directions and handouts. Odds or evens. With one partner. In notebook or separate piece of paper.

After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
