ENGLISH 7
On Tuesday -
Finished grammar quiz.
Shared Two Sides.
Got library cards
Classwork on A Boy And A Man.
Plot diagrams, taking notes on what makes up a plot. Plot Powerpoint. How to.
Began plotting (on diagram handed out),  “A Boy And A Man,” with at least one direct passage in each of the plot steps: conflict, exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution. Story is on p. 180.

On Monday-
Shared the rest of Two Sides
Returned/explained novel checks from last week.
Reviewed grammar worksheet, especially work on nouns.
Completed quiz on common and proper nouns


In Lit Textbooks, read “A Boy And A Man,” p. 180.
The story takes place in the Swiss Alps mountains, when a young boy, Rudi, who is hiking, notices a man who is trapped on the glacier. Look for elements of character as well as plot.
If finished, read your novel, which you are required to bring with you to English class every day.
HW: Tues: Finish reading “A Boy and A Man.” (Whatever you did not get done in class.)

Weds: Planner; Thurs: Mug; Friday: Spelling Unit 5, exercises 1-20, p. 31 and a quiz; Novel check #2 and 2/3 novel!


ENGLISH 8
On Tuesday-
Returned plot diagrams to use for summary.
Task -- Using your notes and the textbook and your plot diagram, wrote a brief, five-paragraph summary of The Adventures of the Speckled Band. Make sure you name the main characters and cover the five stops along the plot line, that is:
1)exposition, 2) rising action, 3) climax, 4) falling action and 5) resolution. This summary can be no longer than five paragraphs. You have only this period to write it. A  minimum of five direct passages, properly cited, is required.
Classwork only. Title your summary, Speckled Band Summary.
On Monday-
Got new handout, essays. How to read a prompt and types of essays.
Read together, page 17. On your own, read the next three pages.
Completed quiz, Classifying Essay Prompts.

After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
