ENGLISH 8

Class novel start. Pre-reading activity, The Pearl. Anticipation Guide.
Began work on John Steinbeck. Took notes on author, his life and his work. Discussed and got handout on literary terms to know while reading the novel.

Handed out copies of 1st chapter of The Pearl. For homework, read Chapter 1 of The Pearl and answer questions on worksheet. Due Weds.

IOA essays returned. Some great writing and hard work evident. Take your time to read my comments so you will know how to improve next time. Writing is work, hard work, and you only get better by doing it again and again. Things to remember for the next essay:
  • Follow the prompt. Use it as a starter for your thesis statement. Make sure you cover the question.
  • Spelling, punctuation and grammar -- the so-called mechanics of writing. Capitalize the first letter of the beginning of every sentence. Yes, you should know this already. No, not everyone did. And yes, at this point in your writing careers, it is is inexcusable not to do it. Spelling problems. Some could have been taken care of if you did a spell check. Do whatever it takes to get your spelling correct.
  • Double-space for editing. Always.
  • Follow the essay prompts and structure. It still helps and you still need it.
  • Conclusions. Hard to do, but vital. Conclusions should re-state, in different words, the thesis statement and what your essay was about. Then, you add a finish, something new, not yet said, that leaves the reader wanting more.

HW: Weds: Read Chapter 1 of The Pearl and complete worksheet.
5th period:Conduct marks and/or detention for no new books to read during SSR

About Me

Sebastopol, CA
After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
