ENGLISH 8
Rewrote a paragraph so that it did not include any opinions. In writer's notebooks.

Now, on opinions. And arguments. And persuasion.
On the art of persuasion. persuade – a verb -- To successfully convince someone to agree to, accept, or do something, usually through reasoning and verbal influence.
In groups you are developing something you want your parents to agree to, something they have already said no to. Think of this an essay speech. To your parents. Be clear about what you want.
1. Grab them at the beginning. Make sure you tell them what you are asking for. Your beginning is your grabber, or “hook.”
2. Support your argument, that is, give them at least two good reasons why they should say yes.
3. Conclude. Sum up. Give them something extra that will convince them they should say yes, something you have not offered before.
**Get your argument in order. Practice. Two of you are the kids, the other two are the parents. One of the kids can be an annoying or supportive sister or brother. Take notes.

Your argument will be presented to the class. We will vote on the winner.

HW: Thurs: Spelling exercises, p. 41, 1-24 and test, Unit 7
Fri: Grammar card lists

About Me

Sebastopol, CA
After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
