ENGLISH 7

QW: If you could give the community in The Giver one memory, what would it be and why?

Returned final project, Seedfolks and other assignments. Discuss. File.

Portfolio assignment handed out. Write name on assignment. You will need a parent signature on your final portfolio reflection. Individual grade sheet later this week.

Weds.  Planner check. All make up tests done by Weds., at lunch, or during one of your study halls by prior arrangement.
       Thurs: Mug shot and grammar packet
        Fri: Spelling Unit 18, review exercises, pgs. 86-89
         Unused late slips due.
      Tues 1/11: Portfolio


ENGLISH 8

Reflective essay brainstorm checked in.

Last essay of the semester. Timed. In class. 40 minutes. Your choice of three topics.
Outline or brainstorm. Use the five-paragraph essay format. Feel free to use any essay handouts you have, but focus on your time. It is limited to this period.

Individual grade sheets and labels handed out. Time to work on portfolio in class on Wednesday, so have work with you tomorrow. Please settle any grade disputes by Friday.

Weds: Work for portfolio
All make up tests done by Weds., at lunch, or during one of your study halls by prior arrangement w/ me and Ms. A.
        Fri: Unused late slips.    Settle grade disputes.
      Mon: Portfolio with essay and parent signature. No late passes.

After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
