Movie essay assignment. Rough draft with brainstorm due Tues., Feb. 1

It is okay to write about a movie rated higher than PG-13 but only if your parents agree that you can see (or have seen) that movie. And when you write, you must take care to keep your language and descriptions appropriate. Select a favorite movie you have already seen and already know you like. You will be taking notes when you watch it again, gathering details (those concrete ones), that will feed your essay. So, it will be easier to start with something you already know. Believe in what you are writing from the start; that gives you a leg up on the work.  This weekend is a good time to get going on at least watching the movie again, if you choose to do that.

Websites for finding free, online movies:www.instantwatcher.comwww.netflix.comwww.surfthechannel.comwww.hulu.com. Rent at the library. You can watch with a friend as long as you each take notes on and write your own essay. You have to be a customer of netflix to watch on instantwatcher and netflix.

Handout on plagiarism. Pre-emptive strike. Don't do it. It might be tempting, especially with all the information available on movies. Stay off the Internet. Watch the movie. Do your own thinking and writing. That's how you get better.

About Me

Sebastopol, CA
After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
