ENGLISH 7

Nice writing yesterday. I hope you feel ready for next week. If you were following directions, you will do great. You are all loosened up now!

We took a look at the criteria that the state uses to  “grade” that writing. And a few of the ones that made it work.

Spelling. Checked in exercises and took post-test Unit  24.

QW: A bit on Call of the Wild. In your notebooks: (1) Describe Spitz’s character using examples from Chapter 3 to support your answer. (2) What traits have helped Buck thrive in his new world? Of those, which do you think is the most important and why?
Literature Circles. Got new lit circle assignment and met with groups. For homework read Chapters 5 and 6 and begin working on your assignment. You will have class time on Monday to work on your assignments, but should make sure you have read both chapters by Monday.

HW: Mon: Read Chapters 4 and 5 Call of the Wild

ENGLISH 8

Picture Prompt. On overhead. Write the letter the child might be writing to his father. What feelings did the artist mean to show? Why is his father not at home? How long has he been away? Notice the boy’s facial expression.
You wrote some amazing responses: a father at war, one who has disappeared without saying goodbye, one who is sick, one who promised to return. A child's longing. A story. Great work.

Women’s Novel project due Monday. Don't forget.

HW: Monday: Women’s Novel Project. Requirements:
  • Assignment sheet and self-evaluation
  • 10 DEJs-- the eight you completed and checked in, plus two more
  • Your interviews
  • Essay, typed

About Me

Sebastopol, CA
After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
