ENGLISH 7

QW: You have made a very important discovery–one that will make you famous throughout the world. Start a story in which you tell about your discovery and how you made it. Be sure to include details about the setting and any characters in the story. Make sure you have a beginning, middle and an end. Careful with  punctuation and grammar.
(Write more on your own when time is up.)

  In literature textbooks, began reading "The Night the Bed Fell,” by James Thurber, p. 252-258. Write a brief, one paragraph summary of the story. Complete sentences. If not finished in class, complete for homework.

ENGLISH 8
QW: Painting prompt.Took a look at a painting by Rene Magritte, titled, The Key to the Fields. Wrote a narrative, a story, based on the picture. Maybe you described the events that occurred just after the moment shown in the painting. Or you  described the events that occurred just before the moment in the painting. Or something else. 

       
You guys wrote some amazing pieces. Maybe it was the rain, or the low lighting, or just that you were inspired. But they were really something. Be ever so proud. I am.
 


    Handed in your first set of DEJS on first third of book, historical aspects.


    Handed out, grammar packet on sentence combining. Due Thursday. Make sure you try to get the points. We will go over in class on Thursday.

After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
