ENGLISH 7
Planners checked
Call of the Wild work.
1) Graded yesterday’s quick quiz on Chapters 5 and 6. Hand in.

2.) Filled out the chart on Buck’s return to the wild. You must use your book to fill in this chart, looking over Chapters 6 and 7 to do it successfully. When appropriate, put the page number next to your entry. You should add a few direct passages, or quotes, to support your observation. You will eventually use this chart to write a final essay on the novel, so do your best to fill it in thoroughly. Finish and hand in at the end of this period.

3.) After you have completed the chart, begin answering the Call of the Wild questions on the second handout. What you can’t complete in class, you work on for homework. We will discuss these in class on Thursday, so you should be prepared to be called on and hand in that work.

Hw: Thurs: Mugshots  30/31.  Worksheet on Call of the Wild questions.
Fri: Spelling exercises Unit 25, 1-20, p.119 and test.

ENGLISH 8
Analy Speech and Debate team visited and entertained with all manner of speaking. Persuasive, impromptu and SPAR.  Speech and debate is open to any grade level at Analy, and teacher Ms. Williamson and her five students are urging 8th-grader to take a chance. At least a few of you at the end of the day said you might be a joiner next year. For more information on the Analy group, go here.

Handed in rough drafts of your speech. On Thursday, we will share with a peer and practice. Speeches will start on Friday. Are there any volunteers?

HW: Fri: Speeches start

About Me

Sebastopol, CA
After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
