ENGLISH 7

Spelling exercises and post test, Unit 25.

Met with literature groups for a wrap-up to Call of the Wild.
Discussed the following questions. Each member of the group had a say. Jobs: discussion leader, notetaker, timekeeper, word-master. Expect a Chapter 7 vocabulary quiz next week.
Handed in completed work in at the end of the period. Your final essay and test will also be done next week.
1.) How did you react to Buck becoming wild? Did you find yourself cheering for him? Or did you feel regret that he was moving away from the world of men? Explain.
2.) How, if at all, would you change what happens to the various characters?
3.) Why was Thornton camping alone? Why was he the ideal master?
4.) What do Thornton and his partners find after a long search? Why does this cause Buck to move toward the call of the wild?
5.) What does Buck find when he returns to camp after killing the moose? Why do the Yeehats consider Buck an evil spirit?
6.) Were you surprised by what happened to John Thornton? Why or why not?
7.) Discuss your journal write about déjà vu.

ENGLISH 8

Had a few speech volunteers. They got extra credit for volunteering and did amazing work. Everyone else, with a peer and a peer edit rubric, practiced. 
Final draft and ready for your speech  Tuesday. You will  be chosen at random, so there are no exceptions and you must be ready.

After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
