*Note: Google Blog was down on Thursday and deleted Wednesday's entries as well. I apologize for not posting. We are hopefully back to normal today. 

ENGLISH 7
On Friday, we completed Spelling Unit 34, exercises and test, 1-20.
Poetry Booklet deadline has been extended to Monday. Absolutely no lates on this. In addition, be ready to present your memorized, favorite poem. No late passes on this one!
                       In class on Friday, we worked on Poetry in Pairs.
With your assigned partners and assigned poems, shared the poem, answered questions about it from the How To Respond To  Poem handout. You will be ready to present in front of class today, Monday or Tuesday. 

HW: Mon: Poetry Booklet, and ready to present your memorized, favorite poem. No late passes on this one!

Textbooks: Spelling and Literature – please return by Tuesday, May 17.
  
ENGLISH 8

We finished speeches, and they were incredible. Some real gems out there. Wednesday is speech tryout day. Please tell me by Tuesday if you will be trying out. Your panel of judges will be Ms. Bosch, Ms. Fitch, Ms. Arrowsmith and a group of peers from 8th grade. I will need a final copy of your speech before you tryout.  It is an honor to be chosen, and so many of you are capable. Remember, that if you are chosen, we will work together on these so that you can present confidently and capably!

On Friday, we almost finished reading your writer’s notebook assignments.

HW: Weds May 18 Speech tryouts
Thurs May 19: Last Novel Assignment due
 
Textbooks: Spelling, Literature, The Write Source and any stray novels of the classroom’s  – please return by Tuesday of next week. Thank you.

After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
