ENGLISH 7
Completed spelling Unit 3.
Novel progress check in #1

Reviewing characterization and character traits.  “Two Sides of Me.” Use colors in your drawings. Models. Due Tuesday. Will work on rough draft in class on Monday.

ENGLISH 8
QW:  “I thought that I was justified in telling rather less than I knew, since no practical good reason could result from it, but with you there is no reason why I should not be perfectly frank…” (Periods 2 and 4)
“It was a fantastic moment. Afterwards, more than one of those present remembered that moment”... (Periods 5 and 6)

The verdict delivered. You did great job saving the narrator's life and sending him for help, or convicting him. The four classes were evenly split between innocent and guilty. Congratulations!

Checked in & discussed questions on Section 1 of your novel. If you were absent or are handing in late, show your work to me on Monday, along with surrendering one late slip.

Next: A perfectly wonderful character paragraph. Get your body paragraph correct and the rest of the essay  is so easy to do!
Short review with handouts of basic paragraph, highlighting topic sentences.

*Assignment: write a one-paragraph character study on the villain in The Tell-Tale Heart. You can start working on it now and get a lot done. We will continue to work on rough drafts on Monday in class, with two peer edits. Final draft will be due on Tuesday.
Use character map/chart and textbook  The Tell-Tale Heart to find quotes and back up ideas, with direct passages (quotes) and page numbers. Evidence to support your argument.

About Me

Sebastopol, CA
After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
