March 23 and on--

Check Google classroom-- Long distance learning begins!

Monday, September 9, 2013

Thank you for all your patience around our technology and equipment. Today was a frustrating day as the Internet was not working at school a large part of the day. Problem solved by 5th period, and then off again during 6th period.  I came home to a slow Internet to try to get this post up. I started thinking conspiracy, or hot weather, or...who knows what. Makes you think how awfully dependent we have become, or at least I have, on things we can't even see.
Equipment failure (computer and projector) is another frustration. Computers get old and outdated quickly. Refurbished doesn't always hold out the way we hope.
Help, though, is on its way soon, when a new computer and a new projector someday come to our classroom. Shall we all keep our fingers crossed? In the meantime, thank goodness that we can read, write and speak with not a single plug or bit or byte necessary! I will try if you will.

Checked in and discussed homework questions on The Tell-Tale Heart.
Discussed typical plot diagram. In assigned group, began working on plot diagram for The Tell-Tale Heart.  We will continue in class on Tuesday and present.
For diagrams, use quotes to detail each of the five steps on the plot diagram, including the page number where you found the quote.

Mystery novels. Many of you are working hard, reading the handouts, using the reading guide to help you with your novel. Some, sadly, need to catch up. Please remember you are required to be reading at the very least a half-hour a day. Reading your novels during SSR gives you 20 minutes--easy! Train the brain along with the other muscles in your body.
HW: Fri: section 1, mystery novel, answer questions and keep up with reading guide
Don't be surprised by a pop comprehension quiz.

About Me

Sebastopol, CA
After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
