Character Study, in class Jing Mei.

Find at least five instances and direct passages in Two Kinds for Jing Mei. Write down the direct passage, the page number you found it and what trait it shows.
When you have found those five traits about Jing-Mei, write one paragraph about her character. Who is she? Use the character traits and direct passages you found to create/write that paragraph. In your notebook is ok, too.

TTTH Character Paragraph. How to do it. A quick review of what's in a paragraph and an exercise. 
A perfectly wonderful character paragraph. Get your body paragraph correct and the rest of the essay  is so easy to do!
Short review with handouts of basic paragraph, highlighting topic sentences.

How to find information about a character. Take notes. Handout out on character traits.

We will continue to work on rough drafts on Tuesday in class, with  peer edits. Final draft will be due at end of class on Tuesday.

*Assignment: write a one-paragraph character study on the villain in The Tell-Tale Heart. You can start working on it now and get a lot done. Rough draft due on Tuesday.

Use character map/chart and textbook  The Tell-Tale Heart to find quotes and back up ideas, with direct passages (quotes) and page numbers. Evidence to support your argument--as always

HW: Tues: RD Character paragraph of the villain, or narrator in The TTH. Use worksheet.
Weds: Final paragraph, typed, the narrator of TTTH.
Fri: Three-quarters through book &  progress check. Bring books to class

After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
