Handed in  summaries for  "A Boy And A Man."
QW: Science Fiction. Write what you think it is, what it means. Have you ever read any science fiction? If so, what? Have you seen any science fiction films or TV shows? If so, what? Do you think science fiction is wildly exaggerated. What is the science part of the term? We will share/discuss after.


Ray Bradbury, “All Summer In A Day.”
In literature text: Ray Bradbury’s science fiction story, “All Summer In A Day,” pgs. 264-270. You can read with partners, switching back and forth. Or on your own, if you choose. Finish reading for homework. Keep track of plot details: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and resolution.


In your notebooks, if you have finished reading, start to write down those elements of the plot--exposition/introduction, rising action, climax, falling action and resolution.


HW: Weds: Planner check and Make sure you have finished reading All Summer In A Day, pgs. 264-270 and written down the major plot elements if not done already.
Thurs: Mug shot Week 4. Expect a quiz
Fri: Spelling week 5, exercises p. 30, 1-20
Novel check #3.

QW: “Don’t fall asleep. Your life may depend on it.”--Sherlock Holmes, a line from The Adventure of the Speckled Band.
  Make sure to fill at least one page in your notebook.
Keep your pen on the paper. Let yor ideas flow and just be. Call it automatic writing. See what happens. Do not edit yourself.


Essay Work. How to dissect or read a prompt.


Begin reading In literature textbook,  The Adventure of the Speckled Band, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, p. 462. Be aware (write down) plot developments so you can diagram the plot of the story afterwards.


HW: Weds: Finish reading “The Adventure of the Speckled Band,” p. 462. Plot it out. Take notes, marking direct passages.
Fri: Finish mystery novel. Last check

After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
