  • Handed in Two Sides of Me.
  • Graded comma quiz from Tuesday. Were you absent?
  • Began reading, in Lit Textbooks, “A Boy And A Man,” p. 180. The story takes place in the Swiss Alps mountains, when a young boy, Rudi, who is hiking, notices a man who is trapped on the glacier. Look for elements of character as well as plot.
  • Notebooks returned Thursday. Full credit for Jing Mei character study, 10 points, if done with direct passages. Less if no quotes.

HW: Thurs: Mugshot Week 3; If not done with story in class, finish reading for homework.“A Boy And A Man,” p. 180
Friday: Spelling Unit 4, exercises 1-20, p. 27 and quiz.
ENGLISH 8 -- Weds, Sep 16, 2015
  • In class basket, handed in rough and final drafts, stapled.
  • Essay Day 2. Quiz on essay terms. A moment to study.
  • In Literature textbooks, read “Raymond’s Run”  on p. 288.
In this story, you will be charting and examining the main character, a girl named Squeaky. You will be writing a character paragraph on her, just as you did on the narrator in The Tell Tale Heart, and as you will be doing on your final mystery novel project.
Take notes where you find an instance that shows something about Squeaky’s character so that you are ready to write that character study on Thursday at the start of class.

HW: Thurs: Finish reading Raymond’s Run, p. 228, lit textbook. Take notes on her character -- instances where her personality is evident. Find those passages and page numbers where located.
Fri: Three-quarters through book &  progress check. Bring books to class.

About Me

Sebastopol, CA
After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
