ENGLISH -- Fri, Sept. 18, 2015
  • Completed Spelling Unit 4 quiz and exercises
  • Filled out a novel progress check
  • Began work on plot diagrams, taking notes on what makes up a plot. Started plotting out A Boy And A Man, with at least one direct passage in each of the five plot steps: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution.
We will finish the plot work on Monday.

ENGLISH 8 -- Fri, Sept. 18, 2015
*Completed in class, Novel check # 3.
Instructions: On a separate piece of paper to hand in--Write a brief, one-paragraph character study on one of the main characters in your novel. Make sure to find at last two direct passages that show something about your character’s personality. Make sure you put the book in context, meaning that someone who has not read the novel will be able to follow what you’re saying.

*Completed (?) Final draft, character study on Squeaky from Raymond's Run. Used returned TTTH paragraph, a character study of the narrator, as a guide what you need to work on.
Because of technology issues in a few classes, you will likely have time on Monday to add the finishing touches to your FINISHED Squeaky character study.

HW: Your novel must be finished on Friday, Sept. 25. You can easily begin working on several of the parts of your final mystery novel assignment. If you have lost yours, click on the link on the left side of this site, under the heading, 8th Grade Assignments!

Pace yourself on this so you do not have to do it at the last minute.

About Me

Sebastopol, CA
After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
