ENGLISH 8
Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2015
IOA RD returned, with a self-edit form to use. Completed essay due Thursday.
Please look at your peer editor’s comments and mine (in purple).
Most of you need to work on your thesis statement as well as have topic sentences-thesis support- that make clear what the paragraph is about and echo (use the words of the prompt and the thesis -- the influence, obstacle and accomplishment.) Use the graphic organizer handed out last week.
Get self-evaluation form, also due with your final draft.

Biography Panel Discussions:
Your task is, as a member of the panel discussion, similar to a literary circle or a book club, in which each of you share information about the subject of your biography. You are the expert on your person. You have a few more moments to to prepare on your own. Look over your biopoem, as well as your 20-question responses you completed and your biography check-ins.
Each one of you will have a maximum of five minutes to present. The rest of you will take notes while listening. After member each has presented, take group time to comment or ask questions and to fill out the evaluation. You will also need to be an expert on the other subjects of your group. That may mean you have to write answers about that other person as well.
If you did not turn in response questions Friday, you get the alternative assignment, even if absent!
Alternative writing assignments given to those absent or who did not complete the questions for homework as required.

HW: Thurs: IOA Final drafts, typed and printed out, STAPLED AHEAD OF CLASS, with RD and peer- and self-edits.

About Me

Sebastopol, CA
After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
