Began The Call of the Wild presentations.
Take notes in your notebooks on the presentations. All of you are responsible for knowing the information for all the topics


HW: Fri: Turn in unused late passes by Friday.
ENGLISH 8 -- Monday, March 14, 2016
1. Handouts on literary elements and themes. Read and annotate for Tuesday.


2. QW:  Given all of Death’s warnings, were you prepared for the way the novel ended? In what ways was it what you expected? What surprised you?  


3. Handed in reading guide--50 points. Will return to study for final  test (Friday) and work on soundtrack.


4. Final draft of speech. If you want me to look it over, leave it with me.


5. Some pointers (videos) on speeches. Click highlighted links to watch.
What NOT to do, a good speaker to emulate (mimic), notice how this speaker uses his notecard. And how can I enCOURAGE you on your speech, what good speakers look for.
Speeches will start on Weds, not Tuesday, UNLESS YOU WANT TO do yours tomorrow.
We will do as many as possible before break, with the rest to carry over after.


6. Time to finish up worksheets on Parts 8/9.  *Do just the odd questions if your last name starts with A through L. Do just the even questions if your last name starts with M through Z. Finish for homework.


HW: Tues: Annotate literary and theme handouts. Speech volunteers only. Finish Parts 8/9 worksheet for homework.

Thurs: Speeches
Fri: Test on The Book Thief . Unused late pass.


After break--Finish speeches and The Book Thief Soundtrack and essay.

After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
