ENGLISH 8

Last week we completed The Boy In The Striped Pajamas
We will be finishing The Book Thief this week, with Parts 10 and Epilogue due on Thursday, and a final, muliple choice/short answer test on Friday. Now is the time to catch up, if not already.

Final project, the soundtrack, is due on Tuesday, Feb. 28. Hopefully, you are well on your way on this!

Today, Analy guidance counselors came by to get everyone ready for high school. Make sure you and your parents fill out the forms distributed and return them to school on Thursday. It may seem a little ridiculous to be thinking about college when you are in 8th grade, but while you are filling out the forms please keep in mind that many courses you choose to do in your freshman year do matter. For instance, if you know you want to apply to a UC school, the admissions policy requires two years of history, four English, three of Math, two of a lab science and two years of a foreign language. However, most of the UCs really require four years of a foreign language, so remember to sign up in 9th grade if that is where you think you're headed. The competition is strong and Twin Hills kids are formidable competitors. You can always drop, but not always add, especially electives. For more information on UC requirements, go here:

HW: Weds. Read Part 10
Thurs. Read Epilogue and complete questions for Part 10 and Epilogue, ready for check-in
Fri: Multiple choice and short answer test The Book Thief
Tues: Feb 28: Soundtrack assignment due.

About Me

Sebastopol, CA
After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
