Looked over and discussed models for women's novel essay.
Showed me your interviews and DEJ entries.
In the essay, you are coming up with a point of view about your book and a social issue you found in it. You are connecting that to what the characters said or did, along with the opinions and experiences of the three women you interviewed.
An example first paragraph with thesis statement:
One of the most challenging issues for American women today is achieving a healthy balance between pursuing a career and forming a stable family lie and marriage. This issue was subtle yet very present throughout Jhumpa Lahiri's novel, Unaccustomed Earth.
Handed out a self-evaluation form. Use this to check yourself, whether you have met all the requirements of the essay. It is due when you hand in the project on Thursday. This is the form where you can write down your reasons for not doing one of the tasks, rather than trying to explain it all on the day it is due!
HW: Weds: Bring material to class for worktime. If you do a rough draft, I am happy to look it over.
Thurs: Women's Novel project due.

About Me
- Miriam Silver
- Sebastopol, CA
- After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
