ENGLISH 8

Soundtracks returned and models. Amazing and thoughtful work from many of you. High grades all the way around. Look it over. File ‘em. Remember to try hard not to say “I chose,” Instead…try something like this:

A great piece of music that would work well with the Prologue of The Book Thief would be Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony because it starts out very calmly and has a sad undertone. In the Prologue, Death, while whimsical, lets readers know of the current pain—the death of Liesel’s brother, and yet the hope of rescue – her foster parents. Death says, “The book thief and her brother were traveling down toward Munich, where they would soon be given over to foster parents. We now know, of course, that the boy didn’t make it.” (19)

Civil War DEJs #1 checked in. Mark historical questions and quotes.

Favorite Poem Project, Day 2.
Finished listening: Sloth by Theodore Roethke, Out Out by Robert Frost and Minstrel Man by Langston Hughes.

Now find your favorite. Pick out a poem. Write it down. (Don't cut & paste). Look up words you don't understand. Read it three times. Think about what it means to you. Be prepared to read it in class & explain how it speaks to you. You will need a copy of it to hand in. On Tuesday to share in class.

Look on the web, in the library, my books, books at home. Find one that has meaning for you. Websites: Academy of American Poets,   Poetry 180. Lots of places to look.

Fri-Mon: Vacation.
Tues: Your Favorite Poem due. Be ready to present and explain why it’s your favorite. Make sure you have a copy of it.
Thurs: 4/12 Second set of DEJ entries due on Civil War book. Two-third through reading.

About Me

Sebastopol, CA
After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
