QW: Imagine you are a reporter for a foreign newspaper and interview Max while he is in hiding in the basement. Write some questions you might ask him about his past experiences, current state of mind and expectations for the future. Then, if time, write his answers. Avoid simple “yes” or “no” questions.

Handouts on Kristallnacht, night of broken glass. Background information to help with reading.
With one partner: research two areas:
  1. Find examples and stories of ordinary citizens who risked their lives to hide Jews or help them escape Nazi Germany and the occupied countries. (Detail it and copy the address link on that document)
  2. Explain why Death compared the years 79, (the year 79 AD) 1346 and 1942? What important events happened in those years? What other years might compare?
Be ready to present your findings. When you finish finding some rescue stories, you have work and reading time -- the rest of today and all of class tomorrow. We will finish the book before spring break!
We have an ambitious reading schedule coming up. Be sure to check in to www.shmoop.com to help.
You do not have to do the vocabulary part of the worksheets anymore!

HW: Mon March 13 -- Read PART 7, (Pgs. 353-403) Complete WS

About Me

Sebastopol, CA
After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
