March 23 and on--

Check Google classroom-- Long distance learning begins!

Saturday, May 20, 2017

Thank you, parents, who came by Thursday night for Open House. It is always fun to meet you, or meet you again and for you to have a look around the classroom and your student's work and see some of what we have been doing all year.
It was an eventful year -- our biggest 8th-grade class in a decade, with more than 120 students. A delight, too, for me to get to talk to future 8th graders, siblings, as well as Twin Hills alum eager to share what they are doing now.
My own son graduated college this week, and I am one proud mom, who remembers his graduation from Twin Hills eight years ago. Yay public education in California -- my son had 17 years of it-- kindergarten through college!  The future is great for my students today, just as it was eight years ago.

Last week was indeed a busy one at Twin Hills in English class for both grades, recovering from a great Olympics day the Friday before, state testing in particular, as well as a variety of schedule changes, ending the week with a fun (but warm) outdoors BMX assembly Friday afternoon.

ENGLISH 7
We finished the novel, Crispin, and completed two sets of chapter tests on the novel.
This coming Wednesday, there will be a final test on the novel that will consist of multiple choice, true/false and short answer questions.
Monday and Tuesday we will have the final, state performance task tests in English.
On Wednesday and Thursday, we will wrap up the school year, getting back portfolios and writing a few notes for us for next year.

HW: Weds: Crispin final test.  Settle grade disputes.
Friday: Reward trip

ENGLISH 8
We had lots of testing this week as well as finished our Civil War novels, handed in our final set of DEJs on Friday and got working on the final Civil War assignment.
That assignment due date has been extended to Tuesday, one extra day.

We did two more essays -- one a final, last look at yourselves, printed out and included with your portfolios that were displayed at Open House on Thursday.

On Friday, completed the re-do of the Facebook Essay, the same prompt given last August at the start of the school year. The hope was that you would see how well you have done and much you have improved in your essay writing over the school year.

We had some fun time, too, writing and sharing partner writing. A lot of funny work. Some of you planning to write for television some day are now ready to be in that kind of collaborative writer's group.  Go for it!
A group of students has been working hard, writing and trying out for graduation speaker spots.

See you on Monday for the final, state performance task tests in English.

On Wednesday and Thursday, we will settle any lingering grade disputes and wrap up the school year, getting back work and writing a note to our future selves.

Have a great weekend.

HW: Tues: Civil War final assignment. (One extra day on this!) If you want your graded work returned, remember to bring in a self-addressed, adequately stamped 8 1/2 X 11 envelope.
Friday: Reward trip

About Me

Sebastopol, CA
After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
