HW: Monday -- Read Chapters 10 & 11
Weds: Vocabulary Set 2. Context sentences--10--and quiz on Set 2.
Finished discussion with partners, write down, then share with class on Monday:
At the age of eight, Jonas had thought of his freedom to choose where to spend his volunteer hours as something to face, but he had come to enjoy the privilege, even thinking of it as a luxury in the midst of all the other carefully regulated hours. His volunteer hours, nevertheless, were recorded and tabulated at the Hall of Open Records, and he had to meet a certain number in order to receive his Assignment at the Ceremony of Twelve.
- Why do you suppose Jonas initially thought of making choices as something he had to face rather than something to enjoy?
- To an outside observer, how might Jonas’s volunteer hours appear to be more of a requirement than a choice? Do you suppose anyone in the community ever complained about volunteer hours? Why or why not?
- If you made the rules in your world, what choices would be available for all twelve-year- olds? Identify the top three and explain their necessity.
- What choices are you allowed to make for yourself? Which one do you consider the most important? Would you be willing to relinquish any of your decision-making privileges? Add details to your answer.
