ENGLISH 8
Handed in 2018 graphic.
Awesome amount of writing, congrats.
A few things about your work--take a few notes. It helps you remember.
1.Review essay structure, which means getting your ideas out so everyone understands what you want to say.
2. Use logical transition words between paragraphs.
3. Do a spell check.
4. Numbers one through nine are written out. Double-digit, 10 and above are written numerically.
5. Quotes must be relevant, revealing and significant, not just state a fact--especially when used to SHOW something.
6. Every sentence begins with a capital letter.
7. Proof your work before the final draft.
8. Avoid saying “I think, I feel or I believe.” Weakens your writing and it is not necessary.
9. Tighten or shorten means to focus your work and choose. Not everything needs to be in there.
10. If an editor writes “awkward” or “confusing,” take a look at that area, read it aloud and fix it.
11. Review “no excuses” words.
12. A writer’s work is never done. But it gets done. Pat yourself on the back when final draft is handed in.
Graded work returned. Read over and file/use for portfolio. Individual, quiet work time on your own.

HW: Friday, portfolio due with parent signature on essay.
Hand in unused late slips.
Make up any missed work/quizzes

About Me

Sebastopol, CA
After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
