ENGLISH 7
Completed Spelling Unit 5 check-in and quiz.
Novel Check # 2-- In your notebooks, write five words to describe your main character. Write one topic sentence about him or her that would be the beginning of a character study paragraph. (Return last week’s check-in & review it)
Example: In the short story Two Kinds by Amy Tan, the main character Jing-Mei is argumentative, bossy and difficult, but by the end is a much nicer, more generous and kind young girl.
Review/return plot diagrams.
How to do a summary? Check this out. Take notes.
Task --Begin working on a written summary of the story, based on that plot diagram. Write a five-paragraph summary of the story, A Boy And A Man. You must use at least five direct passages, one for each stop on the plot line. Will continue on Monday in class. Leave the work you started in class basket.
HW: Coming up next week, novel check-in #3, spelling review of units 1 through 5 and mugshots!
ENGLISH 8
1-Summarizing practice. Read and summarize. Handout.
2- Task - Complete a five-paragraph summary of The Adventure of the Speckled Band, a Sherlock Holmes mystery. Give the main points, in a succinct and condensed piece of writing. Story on p.470.
Use your completed plot diagram of the Speckled Band to write that summary,  Make sure to name the main characters and cover the five stops along the plot line -- exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and resolution. The summary can be no longer than five paragraphs with five significant direct passages, properly explained and cited.
Remember that a summary is major ideas and necessary information. Ask yourself - Do you need this information to understand the text?” If yes, put it in your summary. Your summary includes only the main idea and key information. It needs complete sentences, key information and no unnecessary information.
This is classwork, done in your English class folder. Title it: Sherlock Holmes Summary.  Due at the end of the period.

About Me

Sebastopol, CA
After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
