ENGLISH 7
Speech rubrics returned. How did you do? Did you turn in a rough and final draft? Did you remember your rubric?
QW: Speech Reflection -- In Writer's Notebooks--Please write for five minutes. Reflect on your speech. How did you feel when you were delivering it? Did you think you were prepared? Were you nervous? Do you think you have gotten better at it? What do you wish you had done differently? What did you see in other speeches by your fellow students 
Return and file papers

Handout on character traits. Begin work on Jing Mei character study.
How to do a character study. Our example will be the main character in “Two Kinds.” Take notes. Quiz tomorrow.

HW: Tues: Find at least five instances and direct passages in “Two Kinds” for Jing Mei. Write down the direct passage, the page number you found it and what trait it shows. Type or print and have ready for class. We will work on her character study paragraph together.
Weds: Rough draft Jing Mei character study paragraph; planner check (?)
Thurs: Mug Week 3
Fri: Spelling Unit 4, exercises, p. 27, 1-20 & quiz; Final draft Jing Mei character study paragraph
Reading check # 1--5 points—Read one third of your book.

ENGLISH 8
★Essay Work. 
Essays. We begin. A HANDOUT.  More to come so keep for your files. Take notes in notebook. Always stay current and don’t be surprised if there’s a quiz.

Insanity Trial work.   Gather with  your assigned team. Prepare and present. It might be best if you have one person present all the arguments. Your choice. You may not read from your papers, though you can take notes on notecards. Speak it!

Decide who is the chief prosecutor or chief defense attorney.
I get to judge! Verdict on Wednesday. YOU MAY TAKE YOUR PAPERS WITH YOU AS LONG AS YOU REMEMBER TO BRING THEM BACK FOR A GRADE!

After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
