ENGLISH 7 --Thursday 27 February 2020
Mugshots.
Handed in/shared Jonas scrapbooks.

Yay! Worktime. Got any? Spelling?
HW--Friday, Spelling Unit 13, p. 66. Instead of regular exercises, put each of the 20 words in a sentence. And a quiz on Unit 13.

ENGLISH 8
Yesterday we wrote the first draft of the theme essay work. Thursday is Day 2. Polishing that rough draft.
Looked at a model theme essay. Handouts on introductions, conclusions and a style sheet. Review these. Rework your theme essay accordingly.
When you think you are finished, do the following:
    1.A spell check
    2.A grammar check
    3. Look for No Excuses words. Fix them if not correct.
    4. Consider: Thesis statement and topic sentences in each paragraph. How is that thesis? Topic sentences?
    5. Do you have direct passages? Are they properly cited?
    6. Did you use “I” or “me” or “I think” or “I believe” in a place where you do not need it? Take it out; rewrite the sentence.
    7. Are there linking words to connect paragraphs? Put them in, if not there.
    8. Is the theme written as a statement, a complete sentence, not just a topic. Is it a universal message, rather than specifics to The Pearl?

***9.  When done, take your name off your essay and replace it with your student ID number and class period. Single space your essay. I will print it. Hand in template.

About Me

Sebastopol, CA
After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
