ENGLISH 7
Planners check
New mugshots. This time you will do two weeks at a time. Make sure to check your form. Tomorrow,  you are responsible for weeks 18 and 19. You can have the first 10 minutes of class on Thursday to finish up grammar and mugs because there is a lot to do!

Checked in rough draft Jonas character study. Peer-edited using the praise-question-polish edit form we worked on before. Was it a character study? Did you suggest ways to improve?

HW: Thurs: Mugshots 18 and 19; grammar packet, parts of speech (extensions, too!)
Fri: Final draft, Jonas character study

ENGLISH 8
Checked in and discussed pre-reading vocabulary work.
Handed out worksheet on courage. Due Thursday.

Looked over back and front cover of The Old Man and the Sea. Predict.
The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway’s most enduring works. Told in language of great simplicity and power, it is the story of an old Cuban fisherman, down on his luck, and his supreme ordeal—a relentless, agonizing battle with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. Written in 1952, the novella confirmed his power and presence in the literary world and played a large part in his winning the 1954 Nobel Prize for literature…His tough, terse prose and short, declarative sentences did more to change the style of written English than any other in the 29th Century.”

Day 1: Listened and read Pgs. 9-29
Section 1 questions. You will have time on Thursday to finish those questions.
If you want to read more on your own, go here for the full-text, online version. If absent, make sure to stay current with reading. (You can also come by here at break and/or lunch to read.)

HW: Thurs: Finish handout on courage.   Can work on Section 1 questions, due at end of period on Thursday.

About Me

Sebastopol, CA
After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
