ENGLISH 7

Literature Circle assignments.  Met with groups. Today's tasks:
o     Got Call of the Wild intro and character list
0      Got a bookmark.
o     Got a contract. Discussed how you will conduct yourselves as a literature circle. Added any rules you want. Everyone signed. Handed in at the end of the period.
o     Each group got a set of Lit Circle handouts and made assignments  for Chapter 1 and 2.

HW: Finish reading Chapter 2 Call of the Wild. Make sure you have completed your group task and are ready for discussion on Weds.

ENGLISH 8
Out of 84 students, 22 or about a fourth did the extra credit OMS essay. That is great. I am looking forward to reading them!
o     Discussed how to interview and what to ask on women's novel assignment.
o     Over vacation, finish book and interview your three women. When you return, we will work together on compiling the interviews and writing the final essay on the women's issue book. 
 o     Checked in and peer edit RD compare/contrast


HW:  Weds: Final Draft Compare/contrast essay
During February break
. Finish book. Interview 3 women. Weds 2/23. Write up interviews. Begin essay. Final project due Fri 2/25, with all 10 DEJs

After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
