ENGLISH 7

Spell pretest, only 10 words.

Returned character study paragraphs on Margot in All Summer In A Day. How would you rewrite it, knowing what you do on topic sentences? Rewrote it! Checked it in with me and filed in portfolio.

More work on topic sentences, this time writing a second sentence for the given topic.

Introduction to Seedfolks, a novel by Paul Fleischmann.
Handout, an anticipation guide. Write one paragraph on the back, choosing one of the items you checked as your topic sentence. Three body sentences in the paragraph. 


HW: Tuesday: One paragraph,  good topic sentences, one of the items you check anticipation guide.
Weds: Planner Check
Thurs: Mugshot, grammar worksheet (TBA)
Fri: Spelling Unit 8, exercises 1-20, p. 45 and write misspelled word five times.



ENGLISH 8


QW: Pretend your parents told you that you could no longer be with your best friend because they were a bad influence. What would you say to them? What would you do? Please try to write for the entire time. This is not a short answer assignment; it is writing and thinking!

Demons Final Draft returned. File or keep for studying for Friday test.  Speckled Band returned. Filed.


Essay work-- titles, grabbers and focus statements

HW: Fri: Demons spell test AND One-third through biography. First set of four DEJ entries.

After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
