ENGLISH 7
Completed Spelling exercises and quiz, Unit 4

Checked in novel progress

Begin reading, in Lit Textbooks, “A Boy And A Man,” p. 180. The story takes place in the Swiss Alps mountains, when a young boy, Rudi, who is hiking, notices a man who is trapped on the glacier. Look for elements of character as well as plot.
Must finish the story for homework if not in class.

HW:  Mon: Two Sides of Me graphic about yourself
Finish reading “A Boy and A Man.” (Whatever you did not get done in class.)
ENGLISH 8
Complete Mystery Novel Progress Check #3. On a separate piece of paper to hand in. And, add this:
Write a brief, one-paragraph character study on one of the main characters in your novel. Make sure to find at last two direct passages that show something about your character’s personality. Make sure you put the book in context, meaning that someone who has not read the novel will be able to follow what you’re saying.

“Raymond’s Run” work-- In your lit textbook:
In complete sentences, in your notebook, answer questions 1, 4 & 5 on p. 297. The response to these questions will help with your next task, which will be to write a character study paragraph on Squeaky.
Rough Draft-- Write a one-paragraph character study of Squeaky, the main character in “Raymond’s Run.” The writing must include at least three direct passages to chart how Squeaky changes from beginning to end in the story. Write as legibly as you can, in ink, skipping every other line. Use handout to help.

HW:  Mon: RD Squeaky character study. Write final in class on Monday.

*Note: Your novel must be finished by next Friday. You can easily begin working on several of the parts of your final mystery novel assignment. If you have lost yours, click on the link on the left side of this site, under the heading, 8th Grade Assignments!
Pace yourself on this so you do not have to do it at the last minute.

About Me

Sebastopol, CA
After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
