Reviewed & turned in spelling work from last week-- exercises and quiz.

Discussed handout on character traits.

Begin work on Jing Mei character study.*
Let’s talk about how to do a character study. Our example will be the main character in “Two Kinds.”
How do we find out about a person’s character? Discussion and powerpoint.
Took notes. Quiz tomorrow.


HW: Tues: *Find at least five instances and direct passages in “Two Kinds” for Jing Mei. Write down the direct passage, the page number you found it and what trait it shows. Type or print and have ready for class. We will work on her character study paragraph together.

Weds: Rough draft Jing Mei character study paragraph; planner check
Thurs: Mug Week 3 and grammar, to be handed out on Tuesday
Final draft Jing Mei character study paragraph
Fri: Spelling Unit 4

If you were absent on Friday, you must complete your Mystery Novel progress Check #2 today during class and hand in.

*Insanity trial Day 2. Finish writing your argument. Must have an introductory paragraph and a concluding sentence or paragraph. Must be in your English google docs folder AND printed. We will have the trial on Tuesday.  Printed copy of essay/argument due Tuesday. Finish for homework if not in class.
Each person writes AND TYPES their own essay and hands in stamped worksheet with it. It looks like an essay.
Make sure you introduce your case  & sum up your argument for the jury


HW: Tues: Completed, written argument (essay) for your side Insanity Trial. Ready to present.
Fri: Three-quarters through novel, progress check #3

After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
