“Begin working on a summary of the story. This is the written work based on the plot diagram you completed.” (189)  

HW: Weds: Write a summary of A Boy And A Man, using the plot diagram you completed to get it done. Must use at least five direct passages, one for each stop on the plot line, as you are summarizing the story.
Hand in your plot diagram and summary for full credit.

ENGLISH 8 Tues, Sept 20, 2016
QW: “Don’t fall asleep. Your life may depend on it.”--Sherlock Holmes, a line from The Adventure of the Speckled Band.
 Make sure to fill at least one page in your notebook.
Keep your pen on the paper. Let your ideas flow and just be. Call it automatic writing. See what happens. Do not edit yourself.

Hand in Squeaky paragraph with RD attached if you did it.
Returning papers and a grade sheet. Yup, in English, too.
Correct/grade essay terms graphic.

Read: in literature textbook,  The Adventure of the Speckled Band, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, p. 462. Be aware (write down) plot developments so you can diagram the plot of the story afterward.

HW: Weds: Finish reading “The Adventure of the Speckled Band,” p. 462. Plot it out. Take notes, marking direct passages.
Thurs: Settle grade disputes @ break only.
Fri: Finish mystery novel. Last check. You can be working on your final project that is due Thursday, Sept. 29.

After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
