On Friday, Sept. 23, 2016:

ENGLISH 7
Completed spelling test Unit 5. Exercise and quiz checked on Monday.
Completed Novel Progress Check #3, in notebooks.
Finished summary of All Summer In A Day.
QW: In notebooks: reacting to Margot and All Summer IN A Day. What would you do?

ENGLISH 8
Completed final novel mystery novel check, #4 in notebook.
Write what happened in your novel. How was the crime solved, if there was a crime? Did the ending satisfy your expectations?  How did your main character change during the course of the novel? How was the story a mystery? One paragraph only and six sentences only. Make sure your sentences flow together NICELY, and that there is a clear topic sentence.

In class, completed mini-assignment--“The Adventure of the Speckled Band.” Shared in your English google docs folder, as a journal entry, the following:
TASK: Use summaries and other worksheets (and the textbook if like) to write a series of at least five, dated  journal entries from the point of view of EITHER Dr. Watson, Miss Helen Stoner (the live twin), or Dr. Roylett.
You must take the point of view of that one person and keep it consistent. Make sure that you cover -- from their point of view -- the main events of the story. At the very least that means: what is the conflict at the beginning of the story, several events that represent the rising action in the story, the turning point or climax and the events that lead to the conclusion and solving of the crime. At first, what does Helen Stoner think her sister died of? What is Dr. Roylott’s criminal background?
You must include why the crime happened and who is responsible. In other words, what was Dr. Roylott’s motivation. In your entry, you may talk about Sherlock Holmes and how he went about his work, or describe what you saw or what you think is happening or what did happen. If you are Dr. Roylott, do you think you will be find out? If you are Helen Stoner, why do you suspect your uncle?
In-class work only.

HW: Mon and Tuesday, worktime for final mystery novel assignment
Thurs: Mystery Novel Assignment due.

About Me

Sebastopol, CA
After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
