Graded mug test and spelling test & exercises from Friday, Unit 5
Returning papers
Margot character paragraph work for All Summer In A Day
  • Describe Margot's character, her personality and behavior. Use at least two quotes.
  • What role does she play in the story? What is her relationship to the other characters? How do her actions move or advance the plot of the story?
  • Describe any change that she undergoes during the course of the story. What does she learn?
Now, write one paragraph about Margot, a character study about her personality and behavior in the story, All Summer In a Day

Make sure to use some direct passages from the story that support what you have to say about her. Direct passages need page numbers with them. Story on p. 265. Rough draft in notebook is ok.

HW: Tues: Work on a rough draft one-paragraph character study of Margot in All Summer In A Day.
Weds: Planner check. Count checks and turn in that number for 25 points
Thurs Mugs, week 5 and turn in check in sheet
Fri: Spelling Unit 6. Study all 50 words on p.34. They are a review of spelling units 1-5. Complete the proofreading exercises on pgs: 34, 35, 36, and 37. Don’t write the sentences, just the words.
You will be tested on 20 of the 50 words.

ENGLISH 8
Finish the Speckled Band movie: The Adventure of the Speckled Band.
QW: In notebooks, write how or whether the movie helped your understanding of the story. If you can cite a specific example, do that. Was there anything about the movie version that surprised you?

Let’s talk biography. Begin looking for your next book, a biography of your choice. It will be due to begin reading, Weds., Oct. 5. Must be biography and not memoir.
Autobiographies only okay if approved by me ahead of time.
Exceptions: The Diary of Anne Frank and I Am Malala.
Others, consult with me.

Any time left,  work time. Take a plot diagram if you want to use for final assignment.

HW: Tues and Weds--work time for mystery novel. Squeaky character studies returned to help with final project. Use any novel check-ins or notes you've gather on your novel.
Thurs: Mystery Novel FINAL Assignment.

After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
