ENGLISH 7
Reviewed mugshot, week 16. Turned in check-in sheet.
Handed out Chapters 1, 2 & 3, The Giver. Begin listening. Chapt. 1
Vocabulary handed out.


HW: Fri: 1. Rough Draft Pet Peeve Speech  
2. Read Chapters 1, 2 & 3, The Giver
3. Second Quarter ends. Unused late passes.
4. On your own, create a utopia using the worksheet I gave you on Tuesday. This will be graded. The assignment link here:
Mon: NO School MLK Holiday
Tues: Vocabulary/spelling due. Put 10 words in context sentences. Know their meaning and how to spell. Expect a quiz!
Weds: Pet Peeve speeches start. Everyone ready to go. (Date change, one extra day.)


ENGLISH 8
QW: From Chapter 5: "This pearl has become my soul. If I give it up, I shall lose my soul." First, summarize what happened in Chapter 5. (You can use your notes.) Then, predict what will happen in Chapter 6. Then write for at least five minutes more, or one full page. Be inspired by the quote. Anything. Just write. You could explain what this quote means to Kino, especially in light of what has happened in Chapter 5.


Discuss Chapter 5. Handout -- homework questions on Chapter 5.


HW: Fri: Qs on The Pearl, Chapter 5.
Unused Late Passes due. Notebook check on Friday. (Make sure you have with you.)

After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
