ENGLISH 7
UTOPIA -- handed in. 32 POINTS
Checked in and reviewed speeches with partner if done. 15 points if done.


Vocabulary words. Recognize them. Use post-its. Learn them in context, not memorizing. MAKE SURE TO DO THE HOMEWORK. DUE ON TUESDAY. WORTH 25 POINTS.
Chapters 1, 2 & 3 = quiz. Use a separate piece of paper to do and hand in. Complete sentences required. Can use books.
Can start work on vocabulary. DUE TUESDAY. AND EXPECT A QUIZ.
HW: Mon: NO School MLK Holiday
Tues: Vocabulary/spelling due. Put 10 words in context sentences. Know their meaning and how to spell. Expect a quiz!
Read Chapter 4 of The Giver.
Weds: Pet Peeve speeches start. Everyone ready to go.


ENGLISH 8
QW: "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter"--Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Write. Be inspired, in honor of the birthday on Monday of Dr. King. Sharing these.

  • Checked in notebooks, questions on Chapter 5.
  • Filled out handout and left notebooks for last of 2nd quarter points. Returned on Tuesday.
  • Handouts-- Chapter 6-- annotate and complete worksheet.
  • Worktime, portfolios, get labels or reading The Pearl.
HW: Mon: NO School MLK Holiday
Tues: Finish Chapter 6, annotate and complete worksheet.
Weds: Portfolio due. Will have work time on Tuesday

Settle grade disputes Wednesday during class or at break only.

 Absent on Friday? You are responsible for getting missed work during class or break on Tuesday--Chapter 6, writer's notebook check-in sheet, and portfolio labels.

After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
