TGIF AND HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!
ENGLISH 7
Handout, reading guide questions for Chapters 19 & 20.

Take out Dictionary Digs quiz you got back yesterday.  What do you need to pay attention to? Should we take a quiz today, or hold off until Monday?
You Vote. TGIF!

Two other quizzes to grade.  And some writing. And some reading.

QW: Games-- Jonas ruined a game of good guys and bad guys for Asher and the other children by refusing to fall when he was hit with an imaginary bullet. Memories from The Giver allowed him to recognize the activity as a game of war.
  1. Children in the real world play “war games.” Why do you suppose war games are popular?
  2. Some people say that the professional sports—football, soccer, baseball, hockey, etc.—are adult versions of war games. The team someone cheers for becomes his/her “army.” The games themselves are the “battles.” Do you agree with this line of thought? Are organized sports actually “war” games?
  3. Make a list of games that have make-believe violence as components. Arrange your list in order, with the first one being the most violent and the last one being the least violent. Do you think the top three games on your list should be totally banned? Why or why not?
  4. Consider the last three games on your list. Should they be encouraged or discouraged as an appropriate form of entertainment? Add details to explain your thinking.
You will be able to share those thoughts with partners.
HW: Mons. Read Chs. 19 & 20. Expect a quiz! Complete reading guide questions.

About Me

Sebastopol, CA
After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
