Today, you should be two-thirds through novel. Working on DEJs. Id-ing social issues. Looked over an example of what should be in your double-entry journal. Later this week we will discuss how to interview and what questions to ask.
Speeches continued. Thank you for those who have gone. Now you can relax.
Two-thirds through novel. Working on DEJs. Identifying social issues
We really did start watching The Great Debaters, story inspired by the real-life team of African-American debaters from a black, Texas college in 1935 who go on to debate Harvard students. Amid the racism and prejudice of the time the team manages to take on other “Negro” colleges, as well as established white colleges. Watching for pointers on speaking and engaging your audience, as well as social issues of the time – racisim, sexism, violence, etc.
HW: Mon: Speeches through Thursday
Ready on Tuesday: Bronte, Austin, Christie, Brandon F; David, Julia, Travis, Jordan; Dante, Mari, Ariel, Jose, Harriett, Miles, Kyle; Victoria, Julia; Mac, Anna P, Mason, Keelan, Alex, Jordan, Toby
Fri. Finish novel. Over vacation, finish novel and begin interviewing women on social issues raised in your novel.

About Me
- Miriam Silver
- Sebastopol, CA
- After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
