Read in literature textbook,“No Gumption,” a memoir by Russell Baker, p. 554. If not done in class, complete for homework. Audio link Friday quiz on  both stories.


HW: Friday -- Finish story. Write answers to questions on p. 561-- numbers 1, 2, 3 & 4, all parts. (Not numbers 5 & 6)


ENGLISH 8
Graded quizzes -- Parts 1/2/3. Got one to make up from yesterday?
Get into the mood-- Listen to “Pages From the Basement. In books, p. 223.


QW: Summarizing & Explaining.
What happens in the flashbacks of Part 4? Make sure to include Hans’ background in World War I, why the accordion is so important to him, and who Max is and how he came to be at the Hubermans. Write a few thoughts about Max’ background as a fistfighter. *Important--What is revealed as two things that Max and Liesel clearly have in common?
While writing, Part 4 open and on desk for a check.


Qs for discussion -- Parts 2.3 & 4. Write & hand in one discussion question for the class to enhance our class talk on The Book Thief.

After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
