ENGLISH 7
Grade spelling quizzes and homework from last week. (13)  


Breaking Through -- Here are some questions--
for -- 3-Stepping Out, 4-Together Again and 5- Back to the Fields. Respond with partners and hand in.


Handout next set of chapters, 6 through 11. Annotate for Levels1 & 2 -- Blue and Black pens. See your instructions.


HW: Tues: Read and annotate --Chapter 6 -- “Saint Christopher Medal,” Chapter 7 -- “Summer Skirmishes,” Chapter 8 -- “Becoming a Saint,” Chapter 9 -- “If the Shoe Fits,” Chapter 10 -- “A Promotion” and 11-”A Typing Machine” Make sure to read and summarize in reading journal. (These will be handed in at the end.)
Weds: Planner; Thurs:  Mugs; Friday:  Spelling Week 14  


ENGLISH 8
Anybody for The Hunger Games movie? Turn in parent permission slip. Volleyball players can come; just leave early.


Stamp today for final draft completed. Practice presenting it with one partner. Use peer evaluation handout.
Classwork --
2nd period -- Read “Up the Slide” by Jack London, in lit textbooks, p. 156. Answer all questions in complete sentences on p. 162. This is due at the end of the period, on a separate piece of paper to hand in.
4th, 5th & 6th periods -- Read “Cub Pilot on the Mississippi” by Mark Twain, p. 100. Answer all questions in complete sentences on p. 108. This is due at the end of the period, on a separate piece of paper to hand in.
HW: Tues:  Speeches start. Volunteers first?
Final draft and rubric, to me, before speaking. Notecards to me when done.

After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
