QW: Games-- Jonas ruined a game of good guys and bad guys for Asher and the other children by refusing to fall when he was hit with an imaginary bullet. Memories from The Giver allowed him to recognize the activity as a game of war.
- Children in the real world play “war games.” Why do you suppose war games are popular?
- Some people say that the professional sports—football, soccer, baseball, hockey, etc.—are adult versions of war games. The team someone cheers for becomes his/her “army.” The games themselves are the “battles.” Do you agree with this line of thought? Are organized sports actually “war” games?
- Make a list of games that have make-believe violence as components. Arrange your list in order, with the first one being the most violent and the last one being the least violent. Do you think the top three games on your list should be totally banned? Why or why not?
- Consider the last three games on your list. Should they be encouraged or discouraged as an appropriate form of entertainment? Add details to explain your thinking.
