ENGLISH 7
QW: It’s Valentine’s Day. Make an acrostic poem for MOTHER OR FATHER,
or someone else you care about, detailing who they are. Give it to them.
Acrostic example:

Get handout and groups. Read directions.
Only do the work for your group.
Must be ready for a 10-minute presentation tomorrow.

ENGLISH 8
QW: VALENTINE’S DAY PROMPT-- YOU CHOOSE:
1. Write a poem entitled, “Love Is.”
2. When I looked up and saw Cupid with his bow, I knew we were in trouble…
3. Make a list of people who love you and give at least one reason why you know they love you.
4. Tommy thought Valentine’s Day was for babies. But one special Valentine’s Day made
him change his mind...
5. Clarence the candymaker rubbed his hands gleefully.
Today, he would introduce the world to a whole new kind of Valentine’s Day candy…
6. Describe a time when you felt especially loved.
7. You wake up one morning and find that everything in the world has turned pink for Valentine's Day!
How would this change your typical day? Would you enjoy this pink existence or dislike it and why?

After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
